The Sealy Tiger basketball team fell on the short end of both competitions last week, 68-50 at Fulshear on Tuesday and 75-44 against Stafford at home to close the week.
In the Friday night contest against the Spartans, Cody Manna and Nick Martinez provided nine-point efforts, Reece Novicke added eight points and Callen Rabius scored six as part of a second-half push but the early Stafford lead served as too large and Sealy dropped to 1-3 in District 25-4A entering play on Monday.
This week of play, however, becomes more important with Needville and Royal on the schedule, each of whom sits in front and behind of the Tigers.
In first place in the district are the Spartans at 4-0 with Fulshear behind them at 4-1. In third and fourth place sit Needville and Wharton with identical 2-2 records. Just ahead of Sealy sits Royal at 2-3 and El Campo remains behind at 0-4 so far.
Earlier this week, Sealy played host to the Blue Jays from Needville and will end its week with a trip to Brookshire to face the Royal Falcons.
Friday’s contest at the Falcons’ nest will signal the end of the first round of district play, leaving only six more games after that to decide the playoff seedings.
The rest of the District 25 action on Tuesday saw Fulshear and El Campo square off as well as Stafford and Wharton clash before Needville and Wharton join the Tigers in playing on Friday to end the week.
Last year, Needville finished atop the standings at 11-1 with Fulshear next at 9-3 and then Stafford at 8-4. Just behind those three was Wharton who owned a 6-6 record in district play as well as the tiebreaker over Sealy for the final playoff spot.
The injury bug has lingered around the Tigers for a bit, with Lane Holley, Jacob Gajewski and Cameron Eschenburg all observing Friday night’s loss from the sideline along with Noe Navarro, who was lost for the season before it began.
